BUCS runs a cluster of LDAP servers containing directory information about people and things.

It is currently only available from within the firewall, although at some stage a secure, authenticated service will be made available outside the firewall.

The servers are load balanced by the Cisco routers into two groups:

  • - for general use
  • - for use when writing to the LDAP

The directory root is within which different areas hold different types of information. The most significant are:

People and their roles, used by many systems including Person Finder

Organisation Units forming the University hierarchy

Auto-generated and manually-maintained groups

Central contact point information, used by Phone Finder and certain other systems
