Internal audit tools

Here is a list of tools that can help you with your content audits and inventory:

Spreadsheet for compiling data

Content Audit.xlsx is designed to gather comprehensive information about specific sets of web pages.

To do so, you need to complete the worksheets Inventory and Audit.

The other worksheets contain data for the dropdown boxes in the spreadsheet and only need to be used if you want to change the dropdown options.

Inventory

This worksheet is for quantitative data.

Examples have been provided for most of the columns; comments (top row, click on red triangle) provide additional guidance.

  • Nearly all this data will be provided by a purpose-made tool. This will however, only find pages in the CMS
  • If any of the pages in your selection are in DreamWeaver or WordPress they will need to be identified using the SEO tool Screaming Frog
  • Screaming Frog will only show you pages in the W: (web root) that are linked to. Use this tool to find all the files

Audit

This worksheet focuses on qualitative data.

Examples have been provided for most of the columns; comments (top row, click on red triangle) provide additional guidance.

Some columns have dropdown boxes specifying the range of possible answers; some answers are text-based, others use a ranking from 1 to 5. Guidance on the ranking criteria is in the comment box at the head of the column. There is also a free text 'Comments' column that can be used for specific findings about particular pages.

The IE9 column has been added  because of potential problems rendering multimedia items in this browser. It may, therefore, be best to carry out the whole content audit using IE9 so that any such problems are immediately apparent.
