  1. a clear understanding of how the unit will run, in particular, responsibilities, time frames, and the assessment process
  2. a clear idea of how to access your e-Portfolio and start developing your PDP
  3. started to identify potential project areas through using the capture context template
  4. identified a number of resources and readings to engage with over the next few weeks

Purpose

To talk through the unit, introduce the Moodle course, set the expectations about participation, and time frames.

The aim is talk through Section 1 of the handbook, and walk through the Moodle course

Focus on: the assessment process

Learning Outcome

Purpose

The aim is to get people to start engaging with how the unit is assessed and the marking criteria.

Description of activity

Overview the process based on description in the handbook, walk through of the marking criteria and present a graphical illustration of the process

Participants (in pairs) need to read Paul Shepherd's submission and mark this against the marking criteria. Note: this was based on an earlier version of the marking criteria.

Getting started with Mahara and your PDP

Learning Outcome

LO2

Purpose

The aim of this activity is to introduce you to the PDP, and the Mahara ePortfolio which will manage the PDP process during the course.

Description of activity

The facilitator will walk through the PDP (Appendix 1, handbook). Access Mahara and copy the PDP view, and list the PDP advisor.

Articulating a potential use in your context

Learning Outcome

LO3

Purpose

The aim of this activity is to get you to start thinking about your project and sharing this with others. The outcomes will be captured and made available via the e-Learning staff development Resource wiki.

Description of activity

Give individuals time (10 minutes) to flick through the JISC Effective e-Learning Guide. After which hand out and discuss the capture context template. They'll fill this in as individual. Each person describes the activity they are thinking of undertaking.
Feedback to the group. Notes will be taken, and the output linked.

The participants will need to have worked on the capture context to discuss at the first meeting with their advisor. These will be further discussed at the start of the 20th October workshop.

Purpose

The aim of this activity is to encourage people to start locating and reading practitioner stories and case studies.

Description of activity

Walk through the e-learning web site, and the HEA Subject Centre gateway site.

  • access Mahara - follow the how to create your PDP instructions

  • complete recommended reading (prep) for the 20th
