# Probability - "A given B"

This looks rubbish:

$P(X_t > a | X_t > 0)$

 LaTeX Markup problem Show/Hide latex markup \documentclass{article} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{amsthm} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{bm} \newcommand{\mx}[1]{\mathbf{\bm{#1}}} % Matrix command \newcommand{\vc}[1]{\mathbf{\bm{#1}}} % Vector command \newcommand{\T}{\text{T}} % Transpose \pagestyle{empty} \begin{document} $P(X_t > a | X_t > 0)$ \end{document}  Show/Hide latex error Unable to find DVI conversion log file.

But this looks great:

$P(X_t > a \mathbin{\vert} X_t > 0)$

 LaTeX Markup problem Show/Hide latex markup \documentclass{article} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{amsthm} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{bm} \newcommand{\mx}[1]{\mathbf{\bm{#1}}} % Matrix command \newcommand{\vc}[1]{\mathbf{\bm{#1}}} % Vector command \newcommand{\T}{\text{T}} % Transpose \pagestyle{empty} \begin{document} $P(X_t > a \mathbin{\vert} X_t > 0)$ \end{document}  Show/Hide latex error Unable to find DVI conversion log file.

The macro \mathbin turns its argument into a binary operator like +, which gives it extra spacing.

1. If you are using the amssymb or amsfonts, then \mid can replace \mathbin{\vert}
