Scenario 2 – Engaging learners in critical reflection
Who are the learners?
Masters students on a humanities degree programme.
How does the learning or support currently take place?
Tutorials and seminars are key to the programme.
What works well?
When the students prepare well before the seminar/tutorial then these small group sessions are greatly appreciated by the students.
What works less well?
Students are often ill prepared. Less confident students avoid taking part while stronger participants tend to dominate discussions. Tutors may have no knowledge in advance about how well students have understood a topic, nor can they assess in advance which strategies to use to sustain discussion.
What improvements are desirable?
Making the seminars a more equitable experience for students would be a great help. Finding a way to support student preparation before hand would also be valuable.
